    Am I right!?

As a developer , when a task is assigned to me …I can ask my senior my doubts . I think there are 3 ways of asking about.. 1)How can this be done ! 2) For what reason this has been done ! 3)How its done ! The First question , if I asked calculates as if I have understood nothing or am lazy in analyzing things. Its my Job to learn myself the flow or the flow that can be effected if I do this !! But I can ask For what reason it been done , if I didn’t understand. I have the right to know the reason for doing things like that . Is this conception right or wrong ?

You are not wrong. :) but according to me the order of the question is wrong. For example

When a task is given to me and if its new area in which I have no knowledge  (I have had this experience before)

What I do is investigate firs then go to the person who have better knowledge and suggest the solution and ask him whether he has any better solution (This is nothing but "How can I do it?")

Second instead of accepting his solution blindly I ask "Why should it be done in that way?" (This is the second question)

Third if his solution seems complicated then then I ask for some help in "How it can be done"

    Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;}

What I mean is , when I take a thing to my senior I must have some idea of what it is ?

Otherwise going blindly and asking “How to do this ?” , …sometimes he have his own tasks and depending him , he feels irritated. He concludes the person don’t have the caliber to find out him self.

If its concerned about the flow of the project then , I have to understand from  where I have to start , and will that effect the project t flow . and how the project flow goes till my part.

Hear and forget. See and remember. Do and understand

Yes I feel you should have some idea about what you are going to ask otherwise you will have to explain clearly why you are asking without investigating or studying about the project.

Sorry I don't have much experience, but I suggests you to just google before going to a senior person. They have also some work, plus they need to help us. So better to go with a basic understanding. It helps you both.

Well, it is a matter of:

    • What to ask
    • When to ask
    • How to ask
    • Whom to ask...etc.

Explaining each point is difficult. You can avoid atleast a few questions if you use your brain.

Sample scenario: Suppose, you got some information about your next project. Rather than 'shoot at sight' the questions, you allocate a fixed time for 'thinking' and 'analysing' the requirement. Say, you allocate 90 minutes. May be you will reach the conclusion 'I got it!' or 'this is not going to work' in first 10-15 minutes itself. But you must:

    • Think
    • Think
    • Think
    • Think
    • Think
    • ... up to 90th minute.

Finally you will be surprised to see only genuine questions are pending.

    (This is just an example)

    A valid point indeed, Praveen.

When you ask some doubts and you get a detailed explanation from your helpful and patient senior, you will be so happy and you prefer to be within that comfort zone. This comfort zone is actually a trap where you get stuck if you don't get others' help.

Instead, if you do your own research and analysis, you might not always be able to find the right solution. But, at least you will have a clear cut idea of the situation. You will always be able to find a launch pad from where you can start. You will only need some directions, which could be given to you by your seniors.

If you get a solution without any personal effort (other than irritating your senior), you will not get any kind of satisfaction from it. On the contrary, if you EARN your daily bread you will be able to feel the real taste of it.

When the going gets tough...the tough gets going..!!!
