The International Student Essay Contest provides an opportunity for international students to reflect on their experiences and share their Spartan stories to encourage, inspire and educate others. By sharing your story, you can help fellow students and people in the greater Lansing community walk a mile in your shoes – to know and appreciate what it is like for you to be an international student at MSU today.Share some of your experiences, encounters with cultural differences, insights and emotions during your time as an MSU student.
Since its inception, the United Nations (UN) has been a cornerstone of international cooperation and conflict resolution. In times of global crises such as pandemics, climate change, armed conflict and economic disruption, the effectiveness of UN mechanisms is put to the test. This essay competition seeks to examine how these mechanisms respond to and mitigate the effects of such crises and to propose improvements for their future efficacy.
The Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies at UT Austin hosts an annual graduate student essay competition. The competition is open to PhD and MA students currently enrolled at UT Austin. The winners will receive a certificate of recognition and continuing students will receive an additional cash prize of $500. The best essay, regardless of graduate ranking, will be nominated as our official selection for Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) . The winner of the ASEEES competition receives free round trip domestic airfare to and room at the ASEEES Annual Convention and an honorary ASEEES membership for the following year.

The SMFS Graduate Student Essay Competition is open to all currently-enrolled graduate students, including those who will complete their degree in the current academic year. Papers submitted for consideration should be polished, original scholarly work and may cover any aspect of medieval studies that focuses on issues of women, gender, and/or sexuality. Papers written originally as conference presentations or seminar/ capstone assignments should be revised into article length, format, and style prior to submission for this contest.
2024 winner: Laura Drake (Mississippi State University). Drake’s essay, “‘Death in Its Power Reduces’: The Chatham Square Cemetery of Congregation Shearith Israel” represents an original contribution to understandings of religious diversity and toleration in colonial America. The beautifully framed paper draws on extensive and innovative archival research to make clear, nuanced arguments about the complex experiences of Jewish communities in colonial New York.
SEASECS invites submissions for its annual Graduate Student Essay Prize competition. An award of $300 will be given for the best graduate student paper presented at the annual meeting of the society. Students currently enrolled in graduate programs (M.A. and PhD) and in all fields are invited to apply. All applicants must be or become members of SEASECS. Entries should be submitted as final versions of the paper, with complete citations and bibliographic information. Central to the PLJ’s mission is to provide opportunities for students to explore their own legal interests and to develop their personal editing and writing skills. As a result, the PLJ runs a writing competition for high school students to extend this engagement and accessibility to the law.

To embolden the young to nurture within them the characteristics that transform good students into brilliant writers! These characteristics include critical analysis, independent thinking, a love of knowledge, and clear reasoning.

The essay should represent a student's semester-long efforts in developing the skills and habits of thinking as described on the English 1 official course outline of record. Thus, we will be looking for a 6-10 page argumentative, thesis-driven essay that makes use of researched materials as well as assigned readings in the class. Specifically, we will look for essays that demonstrate the student's ability to:
Beyond the above, a prize-worthy essay will have qualities that lift and distinguish it from simply meeting the stated criteria. It may demonstrate the writer's pleasure in exploring the topic, and/or the writer's attentiveness to the reading audience. It will have subjective but important qualities such as a notable level of intellectual ambition or passion, nuance in the argument, complexity in or artfulness with language. In short, it will distinguish itself from other essays not only through its competence in following protocols but also through its creativity, strong voice, engagement, individual approach, and/or command of the material. 2024 Essay Competition | John Locke Institute
Since it’s an audio-essay competition, the participant must submit an audio recording of their essay. The delivery has the same points as the content (35 points.) So speaking in a clear and authoritative voice is paramount!
