Humans have engaged in storytelling to help make sense of the world around them for centuries. Even our most primordial ancestors engaged in some sort of storytelling, it has almost been ingrained into our DNA to tell stories. If you asked someone why they want to hear other people’s stories, a plethora of possible reasons will come to mind. That is because the reason is different for everyone. Stories can be used to entertain, inform the audience, or be used as a persuasive technique. Stories from

Across time and cultures, we know that interest in the well-being of others is widespread. Self-interest is natural – it is easy and often justified to lapse into a state of self-absorption. Yet to be genuinely self-absorbed is a turn-off to others. Potential friends will be put off by someone who is obviously interested only in himself or herself. And it may be harder to concentrate on those goals that lead to academic success and good jobs if we feel that it is for us alone. People who are not interested in the welfare of others, without being invested in their good opinion, are people who fail to engage the hearts and minds of those whose friendships and assistance they may need later. Self-absorption is also not a good strategy for personal growth – it is difficult to learn about the potentials of the self in general if we never test these potentials in dialogue and cooperation with others. For these reasons, the concern for the welfare of others, the concern not just to relieve their suffering but to help them flourish, is a sign of a person who has begun to move into the moral sphere – to grow up. And this concern is, in global terms, important. In part, this is because it is through cooperation that human beings can become something more than we are as isolated individuals – working together for a just and better world, we can create something worth valuing. But there is also the fact that though progress can benefit people in various parts of the world, the history of progress is also one of new and old forms of exploitation, causing greater inequalities both within and between nations. And so helping to create a better world is a matter of working with and for those who are most in need, and they often have the least voice in what concerns them. The fact that human rights are now a significant force in global politics is evidence that what goes on in one part of the world so far delegitimizes itself if it involves oppressing people in other parts, that guilt is not only a personal matter but can attach to communities and nations. Helping others is not only good for them and a good thing to do, it also makes us happier and healthier too. Giving also connects us to others, creating stronger communities and helping to build a happier society for everyone. And it's not all about money – we can also give our time, ideas, and energy. So if you want to feel good, do good!
peers, a lot of positive feedback saying they thought my essay was on the right track. I would say I took the most feedback finishing my essay from my classmate Taylor, who gave me good advice on how to step away from the essay for a little while and reflect on how my work can improve. Since I had a hard time choosing my main topic and also revising my own work after writing it, I felt this was very helpful. I always struggle to revise my essays; to me it always looks good, I can read it over and over

Ultimately, when we help others, we help ourselves. Beyond the good feelings we get from helping others, the simple fact is that no man is an island, and to turn a blind eye to the needs of others is to deny ourselves the opportunity to create a better society for everyone. To make our world a place where we all want to live, we have to be willing to make a contribution - whether great or small - to the common good. When we do something for somebody else, we not only make their lives better, but we also increase our own sense of purpose and well-being. The selfless act of giving to others can create an improved sense of well-being within ourselves. A study at the University of California found that people who provided support to others reported more positive psychological well-being than those who didn't provide support. Given their altruistic activity, it is not too surprising that participants who offered their assistance to others benefited. What is surprising, however, are findings from a study at John Hopkins University's School of Public Health, which suggest that volunteering has positive effects on the physical health of those who are donating their time to others. Measures of self-reported health comparing a group of volunteers to a group of non-volunteers showed that the volunteers reported feeling healthier than their counterparts up to four years later. This association between volunteering and increased health held even when controlled for other health-affecting variables such as exercise, preventative health care, and gender. We can conclude that if we want to live longer and healthier lives, it would be in our best interest to engage and involve ourselves with the needs of others. Volunteering in our communities, lending a helping hand to a friend, or simply being a good listener all have positive impacts on our mental and physical well-being. After understanding just the few findings on this topic, it is apparent that the more we give, the more we stand to gain. And while it is true that we often receive far more than we give, we cannot hide from the fact that it is our own personal well-being that stands to benefit greatly from the selfless acts of helping others.

It is no secret that lending a hand to help someone less fortunate can be a personally amazing and life-changing experience. When you look at the entire concept of helping others, whether it be in your home country or abroad, it stares a person in the face and says that people who need your help are living below the poverty line. And whether poverty is hunger and lack of food, sickness, lack of shelter, education or any other aspect, it is a serious issue that must be dealt with. Compiled below is a list of a few great and simple ways to help the poor around the world. On the other hand, where poverty is tough to define in Australia, whether it be those who are homeless, sick, mentally ill, etc. The aim is still the same, to give comfort, care and support. Perhaps one of the easiest and most beneficial ways to help the poor is donating money to a charity, an individual or family in need or a cause. Your small contribution could mean food for a child, money for medication, aid in building infrastructure or education. We have to keep remembering that people living in poverty are there because they are disadvantaged in some way or another. Donating money to a charity that works to cure this disadvantage is a way that you can personally help those that are less fortunate. This applies for the poor at home and in many areas around the world. If it's easier, you can also sponsor a child for a small amount of money each week. This money will go towards the child's education, health and wellbeing.
